When I first started working as a nurse practitioner, I had no idea what a locum tenens even was. Graduate school doesn't necessarily prepare us on the multiple styles in which we can be employed as an advanced practitioner. It's implied that we should be a W2 and work for someone else under a contract.
When I finally ventured into becoming a locum tenens, merely by sheer luck, I had no one to talk to. I did my research, but even after that, do you know what happened?!
Thinking I knew enough, I accepted a rate of $75/hr! The locum agency seemed genuine, "nice" and transparent. I foolishly accepted it not knowing my worth or industry standards. After talking to other advanced providers in the same position and at the same hospital as myself, I realized I was making $15 less an hour!
In comparison to my colleagues, I LOST OVER $30,000 that year!
Something had to change.
